Centenary 2009

Centenary Update 02/03/2008

  • Centenary dinner is booked for Saturday 11th July 2009. On this day the inagural competition for the new Centenary strokeplay event will be held, we hope to have the courtesy of the course to enable every member enough time to play and thersafter attend the dinner. The trophy will be presented to the winner on the evening. All members will recive an invitation to the dinner, this will be sent to every member with a reply paid envelope in order that you can confirm their attendance with their partner, this will give us the final numbers for the caterers. Any member that does not return the RSVP confirming attendance places will not be reserved.

  • A special momento of the Centenary will be presented to all members on the night of the dinner. Therefore only those who attend will have this gift.

  • A photographer will also be in attendance at the dinner to take our members photo which will be supplied free of charge.

  • Centenary member and guest day will also be held on the Sunday following the Open which will allow us to use the marquee etc. A meal with drinks will be provided. A centenary gift pack with tees, pitch repairer etc etc will also be supplied to all members.

  • The Centenary Year sub committee will commission a centenary landmark in the form of a Troon St. Meddans Centenary Bridge over the 10th hole of Darley course, which has been approved by the council.

  • In addition a landmark stone structure will be commissioned to sit between the 1st tee of Lochgreen and the 1st of Fullarton which will incorporate a cairn to be opened at the bi centenary.

    RESULTS OF TROON ST. MEDDANS GOLF CLUB CENTENARY YEAR QUESTIONNAIRE

    The Centenary Year sub committee decided that in order to fully explore the memberships wishes as to how they would like to celebrate the Centenary Year, it was important to communicate with the membership. It was decided that a questionnaire would be sent to every member with a reply paid envelope to obtain individuals thoughts on the suggestions on the questionnaire and to also obtain any other specific requests in how to celebrate the landmark.

    To date there have been 101 responses to the questionnaire, with the following results.

    • 75% supported having a special centenary dinner
    • 80% supported the inception of a new annual Centenary competition
    • 55% supported inter club matches with other Troon Clubs
    • 55% supported inter club matches with other clubs celebrating their own centenary during 2009
    • 62% supported having a one off Centenary outing on a neutral golf course
    • 66% supported having all 2009 prize winners awarded a special centenary momento
    • 75% supported having a special centenary momento awarded to all members to mark the centenary year
    • 77% supported having all members receive a centenary gift pack with bag tags, tees etc
    • 68% supported the idea of a Centenary history book published
    • 34% supported a past captains and honorary members challenge match with other local clubs
    • 76% supported a Centenary member/Guest day
    • 67% supported the idea of a Centenary landmark

    A number of other fantastic suggestions were received, all of which are worthy of further discussion.

    • Commission and offer for sale Centenary club ties, hats and sweaters
    • Build a bridge over the Darley burn
    • Provide a vandal proof bell on the fairway at the 14th on Darley
    • Donate a clubhouse clock
    • Centenary photograph of all members taken in front of clubhouse
    • Invite distinguished honorary members to dinner
    • Past Captains dinner
    • Include junior section with a special match between seniors
    • Have a Pro-Am
    • Twin with a foreign club also celebrating their centenary year
    • Centenary competition to encourage young golfers
    • Establish a golf scholarship with Marr College
    • Centenary Cup to be Stableford format
    • Special edition wine to mark Centenary year
    • Have Centenary section on web site
    • Plant a tree with plaque
    • Centenary cairn or capsule to be opened in 2109
    • Play a medal dressed in 1909 clothing and using clubs from that time
    • Fancy dress barbecue
    • Centenary flag with the offer of a dram at special raising
    • Run a centenary charity event
    • Have a special Centenary whiskey bottled

    The hard work now begins for the Centenary sub committee!! A final decision on the celebrations, which will be scheduled to mark the Centenary year, will be compiled in the forthcoming months.
